The Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) has welcomed a contract placed by Rolls-Royce SMR with Westinghouse Electric Company UK to develop a fuel design for its small modular reactor (SMR).
In reaction, Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the NIA, said:
“This partnership is vital to reigniting Britain’s nuclear capabilities on a domestic and global stage. It will strengthen the wider nuclear supply chain and shows the importance of maximising UK nuclear content as we develop a programme of new power stations to strengthen energy security and green our power grid.
“We must also ensure we are world leaders in the design and manufacture of nuclear fuel so we can establish a sovereign supply chain as the West looks to break free from reliance on Russian nuclear fuel.”
