The Nuclear Industry Association, together with nuclear trade associations from Italy, Canada, France, Japan, the US and Europe*, has issued a statement calling on the G7 governments to help maximise the use of existing nuclear power plants and set out clear plans for nuclear energy deployment.
“The UK has set an ambitious target of reaching 24 GW of nuclear capacity by 2050 which is essential to meet net zero and energy security goals. Globally, 25 nations pledged to triple their nuclear capacity at COP28″ Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association said. “Turning these targets into reality is now of the utmost importance and this statement shows there is widespread support for that to happen at pace and at scale so we can make real progress.”
In this respect, the signatories call on the G7 Climate, Energy and Environment Ministers to take decisive action in the following areas:
- Establish optimum conditions through consistent and coherent long-term policies that enable the extension of the operating life of existing reactors and facilitate fleet deployment of nuclear technologies.
- Provide clarity to investors on the funding and investment recovery mechanisms available for nuclear projects.
- Ensure ready access to national and international climate finance mechanisms for nuclear development.
- Ensure that multilateral financial institutions include nuclear energy in their investment portfolios.
- Clearly and unambiguously label nuclear energy and the associated fuel cycle as a sustainable investment.
- Promote development of the supply chain commensurate with expansion targets and continue investment in nuclear research.
