Nuclear energy is a cornerstone of UK clean power, contributing £123 billion to UK economic growth, and providing 31,000 highly skilled, valuable jobs.
Meet five of Cavendish Nuclear's energy and hear their thoughts for National Apprenticeship Week.

Why did you choose to work in the nuclear sector?
“I was drawn to working in the nuclear sector because of the scale and importance of the work. Nuclear plays a key role in delivering reliable, low carbon energy and working in such a safety focused environment means projects must be planned and delivered properly. Working in nuclear you are part of something important and that is something I am proud of.”

Why is now an exciting time to be in the nuclear sector?
“The nuclear sector never stops developing, that is particularly true right now with the introduction of SMRs as a new way of bringing nuclear power to wider locations, as well as redeveloping existing sites into new reactors such as Hinkley Point C, and the continued decommissioning of the variety of sites around the UK. There is never a dull day, and the range of work means there is something for everybody.”

What does it mean to you personally to work in Nuclear?
“I take great pride in being part of the nuclear sector. Although it was initially challenging, the support I received from my colleagues at Cavendish Nuclear helped me settle in quickly. The work is incredibly rewarding and motivates me to strive for continuous improvement every day.”

What’s one thing about working in the nuclear industry that people might not expect?
“Many people are surprised that you don’t need a PhD in physics to work in nuclear. You can enter the industry through an apprenticeship with A-levels and build your career from there. The range of roles is huge – engineering, project management, safety case, security, administration, and many more. Another unexpected fact is that nuclear workers typically receive a lower annual radiation dose than airline flight crew. The industry is far more diverse, accessible, and safety-driven than most people realise.”

What would you say to someone considering a nuclear apprenticeship?
“To consider it as a brilliant option to gain industry experience and further your education simultaneously – nuclear is an ever-evolving innovative industry with major opportunities for career development and involvement in interesting and diverse work. An apprenticeship allows you to get hands on with the work and gives you the opportunity to gain valuable experiences first-hand without having to miss out on an excellent education. I highly recommend everyone should consider an apprenticeship in the nuclear industry.”
