Welcoming the Written Statement on Nuclear Energy in Wales (link) from the Welsh First Minister, Eluned Morgan, which supports accelerating new nuclear projects, recognises nuclear as a clean energy source and anticipates increased interest across several sites, Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said:

“This sends a clear and positive signal about the role nuclear will play in Wales’s future.

“Recognising nuclear as a clean energy source, alongside support for accelerating new projects and growing developer interest, underlines the vital contribution nuclear can make to delivering net zero, strengthening energy security, and creating high-quality jobs and investment across Wales.

“We are particularly encouraged by the commitment to accelerate delivery in light of the Nuclear Regulatory Taskforce Review, which the Welsh Government has agreed with in principle. Streamlining delivery will be essential to ensuring projects – particularly Rolls-Royce SMRs at Wylfa – can be delivered at pace and at scale, so that economic benefits can be felt as early as possible.

“The nuclear industry stands ready to work with the Welsh Government, Natural Resources Wales and partners to realise these opportunities and ensure Wales is at the forefront of the UK’s clean energy transition.”
