Heidelberg Materials UK has introduced its Power range of construction products with high thermal conductivity and low thermal resistivity to support the growing demand for energy infrastructure.

The range is designed to allow the heat generated by high-voltage and ultra-high voltage underground electrical cables to dissipate, improving energy transmission, reducing power wastage and enhancing electrical safety.

The Power range will support the rapid growth in energy facilities such as data centres, battery storage units, substations, and wind and solar farms. Its use helps maximise the efficiency of energy generation, transmission, distribution and storage, as well as supporting the ongoing maintenance and upgrade of these assets.

It includes PowerCrete, a unique, first to market, high-performing concrete with a thermal conductivity of 2.5W/km – the highest of any concrete available in the UK – as well as PowerSand CBS and CBS Extra, ENA TS 97-1 compliant cement bound sands. The range is completed by cable backfill, gel bedding materials and heat-conducting grout.

Daniel Clayton, Technical Director, Concrete at Heidelberg Materials UK, said:

“Heat generation can be an issue with underground cabling. As the cable temperature rises, so does the resistance, leading to transmission loss.

“Effective thermal management is critical to the long-term reliability and resilience of the cable network, and we offer the highest performing, and most comprehensive range of products in the market.”

Products from the Power range have already been used on major UK infrastructure projects including Hinkley Point C, National Grid substations and Hornsea offshore wind farm.

The full Power range comprises of:
  • PowerCrete thermally conductive concrete
  • PowerSand CBS and PowerSand CBS Extra cement bound sands (ENA TS 97-1 compliant options)
  • PowerFill cable backfill material (ENA TS 97-1 compliant options)
  • CableGel 0.8 and CableGem 0.5 – gel cable bedding materials (bagged)
  • CableCem F 0.8 and CableCem F 0.4 heat-conducting grouts (bagged)
