Following the grid operator warning over power supplies in the heatwave, Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said:
“While the UK is making progress towards stronger energy security with yesterday’s announcement of the life extension for Sizewell B, this warning shows we are still grappling with the reality of our nuclear power stations retiring without the necessary replacements.
“Without new investment and decisions on new nuclear projects, these warnings will become more commonplace and the threat to our energy resilience will grow. We will have to continue relying on volatile gas markets to fill the gaps in supply, driving up bills and carbon emissions.”
