Wylfa contract is ‘historic’ step for Welsh clean power, industrial growth and jobs
The Nuclear Industry Association has welcomed the contract signed by Rolls-Royce SMR and Great British Energy – Nuclear, which paves the way for a fleet of small modular reactors (SMRs) to be built at Wylfa, Ynys Môn. The project is expected to create 8,000 jobs across the UK, including 3,000 locally.
Welcoming the agreement, Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said:
“This is a historic step for clean power, industrial growth and skilled jobs in Wales. It marks the beginning of a significant and exciting new phase for the project and the people of Ynys Môn.
“It allows work to begin on a project that will create thousands of jobs and attract significant investment locally and across Britain, while helping to secure the UK’s long-term supply of reliable, low-carbon power.
“Wylfa is a very special site with unique strengths, and the sector stands ready to help make the country’s first SMR fleet a success, putting Britain at the forefront of new nuclear development.”

Mae Cymdeithas y Diwydiant Niwclear wedi croesawu’r contract a lofnodwyd gan Rolls-Royce SMR a Great British Energy – Nuclear, sy’n paratoi’r ffordd ar gyfer adeiladu cyfres o Adweithyddion Modiwlaidd Bach (SMRs) yn Wylfa, Ynys Môn. Disgwylir i’r prosiect greu 8,000 o swyddi ledled y DU, gan gynnwys 3,000 yn lleol.
Wrth groesawu’r cytundeb, dywedodd Tom Greatrex, Prif Weithredwr Cymdeithas y Diwydiant Niwclear:
“Mae hwn yn gam hanesyddol ar gyfer ynni glân, twf diwydiannol a swyddi medrus yng Nghymru. Mae’n nodi dechrau cyfnod newydd sylweddol a chyffrous i’r prosiect ac i bobl Ynys Môn.
“Mae’n galluogi dechrau gwaith ar brosiect a fydd yn creu miloedd o swyddi ac yn denu buddsoddiad sylweddol yn lleol ac ar draws Prydain, tra’n helpu i sicrhau cyflenwad hirdymor y DU o ynni dibynadwy, carbon isel.
“Mae Wylfa yn safle arbennig iawn gyda chryfderau unigryw, ac mae’r sector yn barod i helpu i wneud fflyd SMR gyntaf y wlad yn llwyddiant, gan roi Prydain ar flaen y gad o ran datblygu niwclear newydd.”
