In response to Great British Energy-Nuclear’s new siting study finding Scotland has areas with “high potential” for new nuclear development (link), Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said:
“This independent report confirms what nuclear communities have long known: Scotland has excellent potential to host new nuclear projects. With suitable sites, a highly skilled workforce, and decades of nuclear expertise, Scotland is ready to benefit from the next generation of nuclear technologies.
“While the UK enters a new era of nuclear development, Scotland has already missed out on around 5,000 highly skilled and highly paid nuclear jobs, despite nuclear being Scotland’s most popular energy source.
“Scotland needs a reliable and firm foundation for a secure, low-carbon electricity system. It is time to lift the planning consent block, and unlock new investment that strengthens energy security, supports local communities, and creates thousands of jobs.”
