Welcoming the Tony Blair Institute’s report, “Revitalising Nuclear: The UK Can Power AI and Lead the Clean-Energy Transition” (link), Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said:

“The Tony Blair Institute is right to say that Britain can become a global leader in nuclear energy with a huge opportunity to power the drive for AI, help decarbonise industries and provide clean electricity for the grid. We agree that nuclear is the most cost-effective way for Britain to deliver net zero with new projects promising to drive economic growth and good jobs across the country. For that to happen we must be confident and grab this opportunity before it’s too late by setting out a clear, long-term plan for new nuclear projects – both SMRs and GW stations – that are sensibly regulated and delivered at pace, taking us to 2050 and beyond as is happening in other countries including in the US.”

Notes to Editors

  • The UK has nine reactors across five nuclear sites providing around 14% of the country’s electricity from 5.9 GW of capacity. Of the current nuclear fleet, only Sizewell B will be online after 2028. Hinkley Point C is due to come online between 2029 and 2031.
