In response to the Energy Security and Net Zero Committee’s report, The new National Policy Statement for nuclear energy generation, Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said:

“We welcome the Committee’s findings, particularly its recommendation that the Semi Urban Population Density Criterion (SUPDC) be reformed without delay. A modern, effective siting policy is essential to give investors and developers the confidence to move projects forward at places like Heysham.

“We also support the Committee’s call for EN-7 to deliver a genuinely joined-up approach across planning, safety and environmental regulation, providing a clear and coherent framework for decision-making.

“Guidance under EN-7 should clearly set out the evidence required from applicants and be updated regularly as lessons are learned. A transparent, responsive system will be key to delivering new nuclear efficiently and meeting the UK’s energy security and net zero goals.”
