Hear from three of NIS Ltd's apprentices about why they chose to work in the nuclear industry, the practical experience they have gained, and what advice they'd give to other people contemplating an apprenticeship.

“When I first heard about apprenticeships in the nuclear industry, I didn’t think it was something I could do. It felt too technical and too advanced. Once I joined NIS, I realised how much the processes and quality systems guide the work. Understanding those has made everything feel far more achievable than I expected.

“The part I enjoy most is learning through practical experience. I’ve always preferred handson work and being able to build skills on the job but still having college days to support what I’m learning has helped me progress quickly. The people here make a big difference too. NIS has a strong reputation for quality, and you can see why when you work alongside people who take real pride in what they do.

“For anyone thinking about an apprenticeship in the nuclear industry, I’d say it’s a great choice if you are precise and like getting things right. It’s a solid start to a longterm career. Looking ahead, I’d love the chance to work abroad or move into a higherlevel role on site within the company.”

“Before I joined NIS, I didn’t have a clear picture of what the nuclear industry involved. I didn’t realise how many safety controls were in place or how much accuracy the work demands. Seeing it up close has changed my view completely. The focus on doing things safely and correctly is huge, and it’s something I’ve come to really respect.

“One of the biggest positives for me has been the balance between earning and learning. Getting real experience while studying has helped everything make more sense, and it’s also helped me build strong working relationships. Something I’ve noticed about NIS is that the company genuinely sticks to its values. People treat you with respect, and that makes a big difference when you’re starting out.

“I wanted a route that would give me proper work experience while still allowing me to study, and my apprenticeship has done exactly that. It’s helped me grow in confidence and understand what the industry expects.

“If someone was considering an apprenticeship in the nuclear sector, I’d say it’s a great choice if you like a challenge and want to be part of something meaningful. After I complete my apprenticeship, I hope to keep developing my knowledge and take on more responsibility.”

“What’s stood out most during my apprenticeship is how much easier it is to learn when you can see things happening in real time. I pick up theory at college, then come into work and watch it being applied on actual projects. That mix has helped me understand the job properly and build confidence in what I’m doing.

“Before joining NIS, I didn’t realise how big the nuclear industry is or how important it is to the country. Seeing the scale of it has been a real eyeopener. The accuracy involved surprised me as well. Every detail matters, and you quickly understand why the standards are so high.

“Handson learning has always suited me, so an apprenticeship felt like the right route. Being paid while gaining experience has made the whole process feel more worthwhile, and NIS have given me the time and support to develop at a pace that works.

“For anyone my age thinking about the nuclear sector, I’d say it’s worth exploring. You learn a lot about yourself as well as the industry. Once I complete my apprenticeship, I hope to stay at NIS in a fulltime role and keep building my skills.”
