The Energy Market Authority (EMA) – responsible for regulating and developing Singapore’s energy  industry  – has appointed Mott MacDonald to conduct a study on advanced nuclear energy technologies for Singapore. The study will evaluate safety performance and technical feasibility, with a particular focus on small modular reactors (SMRs).

Although Singapore has not made any decision on nuclear energy, the study will tap on the company’s global nuclear expertise. Mott MacDonald’s international nuclear portfolio spans independent safety assessments, licensing and regulatory support, technology maturity evaluations, and integration of nuclear power into diverse energy systems. The company has over 60 years of nuclear experience advising governments, regulators, and operators across Europe, the Middle East, and Australasia.

“Through pioneering cross border interconnector projects, gigawatt renewable energy development, and now advanced nuclear energy technologies, we’re proud to be supporting the Southeast Asia region in strengthening energy security and decarbonisation goals,” said David Boyland, Mott MacDonald’s Managing Director for Asia.

“We’re looking forward to supporting EMA in shaping a future-ready energy strategy that advances resilient, scalable, safe and sustainable technologies, in line with international safety standards and Singapore’s energy transition needs.”

“Singapore’s exploration of advanced nuclear technologies reflects its commitment to a secure, low carbon future,” said Dr Ming Tan, Mott MacDonald’s global practice leader for nuclear.

“By combining our local presence and understanding of Singapore’s unique challenges with the depth of our global nuclear expertise, we will deliver a rigorous, evidence-based evaluation to support EMA’s long-term energy planning.”
