Reacting to the Chancellor’s Budget, in which Sizewell C received £2.7bn of funding to continue development and the government’s intent to position the UK as a ‘global leader in sustainable nuclear energy’ through SMRs and fusion energy research, Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association said:

“We welcome the Chancellor’s commitment to delivering new nuclear projects for energy security, clean power and good, skilled jobs. Funding for Sizewell C ensures one of the most important clean energy infrastructure projects in British history can progress. The project will power 6 million homes for over 80 years, creating thousands of jobs and bringing substantial investment to businesses and communities up and down the country, so certainty on reaching a Final Investment Decision is vital.

“On a Budget Day when expensive fossil gas is making up 50% of the electricity mix, it’s incredibly important that new nuclear projects are progressed at pace and scale so we can help meet the government’s energy security and net zero ambitions and to get Britian building again.”
