Public support for nuclear energy surges in Scotland

New polling from YouGov shows strong and growing support for nuclear energy in Scotland, with a clear majority of the public now backing its role in the country’s energy mix.

The data reveals that nuclear is now the most popular form of energy generation in Scotland. When asked which energy source they support most, 29% of respondents chose nuclear, ahead of wind at 23%. This marks a significant change over the past year, with nuclear overtaking renewables as public confidence grows.

In a further boost for the sector, 54% of Scots support nuclear power, compared to just 29% who oppose it – a net favourability of +25. Notably, the proportion of people expressing strong support has also increased, underlining a shift in public attitudes.

Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said:

“Public opinion in Scotland is moving decisively in favour of nuclear. These results show that nuclear is not only widely supported but is now the most popular energy source in Scotland. That reflects growing awareness of its role in delivering net zero, strengthening energy security and creating high-quality jobs.

“Scotland has a proud nuclear heritage and a highly skilled workforce. With the right policy framework, there is a real opportunity to build on that and ensure Scotland benefits from the next generation of nuclear projects.”
