Welcoming the news that two nuclear power stations – Heysham 1 and Hartlepool – have been granted a lifetime extension of 12 months and will continue generating power until March 2028 (link), Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said:

“These lifetime extensions are hugely welcome — they’ll cut bills, cut emissions and protect jobs in communities that rely on them. It’s the single biggest step forward for energy security this year, and a vital boost for our stretched power grid.

“And the real opportunity ahead is even greater: by building new nuclear alongside these extensions, we can secure a clean, reliable and resilient power system for the long term.”

  • The UK has nine reactors across five nuclear sites providing around 14% of the country’s electricity from 5.9 GW of capacity. Of the current fleet only Sizewell B will be in operation after March 2030.
