The Nuclear Industry Association is calling on the Scottish Government to end its ban on new nuclear and back a Hunterston C to deliver clean power, energy security, jobs and investment.

In welcoming the milestone transfer of Hunterston B to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority – marked today by a new site licence granted by the regulator, the ONR (link) –Tom Greatrex, Nuclear Industry Association Chief Executive, said:

“The local community, the workforce and the nation deserve the chance to have a Hunterston C. Scotland needs secure, reliable, sovereign power from nuclear more than ever, and the jobs and investment that come with it.

“Countries all over Europe are abandoning their old opposition and turning back to new nuclear to strengthen energy security and hit net zero. There is an emerging arc of energy security which Scotland is choosing to absent itself from. The Scottish government should reconsider their outdated and illogical position, so Scotland can benefit from the investment, employment and secure reliable energy which Wales and England will benefit from. Scottish workers should not be left behind.”

Notes to editors

  • Hunterston B came offline in January 2022 after more than 45 years of service, generating enough electricity over its lifetime to power every home in Scotland for 31 years.
  • Torness, Scotland’s last remaining nuclear power station, comes offline in March 2030.
  • NIA CEO Tom Greatrex is available for interview upon request.
