In reaction to Britain Remade polling revealing that 52% of SNP voters oppose the Party’s stance on nuclear, Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said:

“The SNP should listen to their voters and back nuclear so that jobs, skills and investment stay in Scotland.

“Nuclear workers have been keeping Scottish lights on for over 60 years, making a valuable contribution to their communities. The SNP should also be reminded that over half of nuclear jobs are in the most deprived council areas, and that Scotland’s last nuclear power station, Torness, is the cleanest, biggest, most reliable energy generator the nation has ever had.

“As energy demands grow, the science tells us that a secure and resilient energy system requires a mix of firm and intermittent power sources which only renewables backed up by nuclear can do.

“Instead of ignoring the facts, the SNP should ensure Scotland joins the 30 countries backing nuclear because it’s the right thing to do for their voters, people and the planet.”

Notes
Polling from Britain Remade, to be released on Thursday 1 May, shows that over half (52%) of those who voted for the SNP in 2021 believe nuclear power should be included in Scotland’s energy mix to meet the Scottish Government’s 2045 net zero target. A third (33%) remain opposed, while 15% are undecided.

Torness is Scotland’s last remaining nuclear power station and makes up 15% of Scotland’s share of electricity generation.
