The Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) is joining 16 national and international industry associations from 15 countries across three continents in signing a joint declaration at the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris, ahead of COP30 in Brazil. This brings together an unprecedented coalition of nuclear industry organisations – up from 11 signatories in 2021 – to speak with one clear voice on the need to expand nuclear energy to meet global climate and energy security goals.
Coordinated by GIFEN and the World Nuclear Association (WNA), the declaration calls on governments worldwide to uphold the commitment made at COP28 to triple global nuclear generating capacity by 2050, supported by clear, stable policy frameworks and access to suitable financing mechanisms.
As electricity demand rises sharply and the effects of climate change intensify, nuclear energy provides reliable, dispatchable, low-carbon power at scale. It stabilises grids, supports industrial competitiveness, and has already avoided around 70 gigatonnes of CO₂ over the past 50 years. Nuclear currently provides 23% of the world’s low-carbon electricity, and could avoid a further 90 gigatonnes of emissions by 2050 (IEA, Energy Institute, IAEA).
The signatories are calling for:
Tripling global nuclear capacity by 2050
Safely extending the life of existing reactors where appropriate
Launching new nuclear projects, including large-scale reactors and SMRs/AMRs
Strengthening the entire nuclear fuel cycle to enhance resilience and security of supply
Expanding access to green finance and market frameworks that support long-term investment and innovation
Technological advances, including SMRs, AMRs and next-generation reactors, enable nuclear to support new sectors such as industrial heat, low-carbon hydrogen production, and non-electric applications from healthcare to maritime propulsion. With exceptionally high energy density and a low material footprint, nuclear helps conserve natural resources, protect biodiversity, and create high-skilled, long-term regional employment.
This is the largest gathering of national and international nuclear industry associations ever to jointly state their priorities ahead of a COP summit. The breadth and unity of the group underscore the maturity, readiness, and ambition of the global nuclear sector to deliver on climate targets, ensure energy security, and support sustainable industrial growth.
The declaration is signed by: GIFEN (France), World Nuclear Association, nucleareurope, Nuclear Industry Association (UK), FinNuclear (Finland), ABDAN (Brazil), BNF (Belgium), AIN (Italy), Nuclear Nederland (Netherlands), CNA (Canada), SNF (Switzerland), JAIF (Japan), KAIF (South Korea), IGEOS (Poland), CNEA (China), ROMATOM (Romania), and FORONuclear (Spain).
