Welcoming the government’s Clean Power 2030 action plan which sets out how nuclear and renewables will be the ‘backbone of a clean electricity system by 2030’, Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association said:

“Nuclear baseload is the vital thread that holds Clean Power 2030 together. In a week that has seen the need for gas hit a record high, making up 70% of the mix at times, and power prices hit an eye-watering £3,400/MWh, the UK desperately needs new nuclear to strengthen energy security, protect bills and create jobs.

“We also welcome the commitment to streamlining regulation for nuclear which should help ensure projects come online quicker so that we have enough reliable power on the grid beyond 2030 and out to 2050.

“What’s important now is that we ensure there are firm plans in place for new nuclear projects beyond Sizewell C and a fleet of Small Modular Reactors, including an urgent plan for Wylfa, so that we don’t end up having to rely on expensive, dirty gas to keep the lights on like this week.”

Notes to Editors

  • The UK has nine reactors across five nuclear sites providing around 14% of the country’s electricity from 5.9 GW of capacity. Of the current fleet only Sizewell B will be in operation after March 2030. Hinkley Point C is due to come online by the end of the decade.
