In reaction to two announcements on the future of fusion energy in the UK, including a £410 million government investment to accelerate the development of fusion energy (link), and a shortlist of potential industry partners for the world-leading STEP programme in Nottinghamshire (link), Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said:
“This significant investment shows the UK is serious about delivering clean power, jobs and growth and will help cement our reputation as a world leader in fusion. Fusion will be vital as we explore ways to meet the demand for clean, reliable, secure electricity to drive down emissions and to power emerging sectors like AI.
“Pushing ahead with groundbreaking projects like STEP on the former West Burton coal site is now vital to realise the economic opportunity fusion offers and today’s announcement will unlock opportunities for the wider sector, sustaining and creating jobs and attracting other industries to the region.”
