In reaction to the Climate Change Committee’s Carbon Budgets for Scotland, which shows the country made little progress in cutting emissions from its electricity generation between 2017 and 2022, and no progress in cutting its share of gas generation in that time (link), Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said:
“The only way Scotland can make real progress in cutting emissions and cutting its reliance on gas is to ditch its renewable-only approach to decarbonisation and back nuclear.
“Scotland risks becoming an anti-nuclear outlier if it does not follow the lead of a growing list of countries, including Germany and Denmark, now backing nuclear because they understand that only a mix of clean power sources ensures real energy security.
“It’s not too late for a rethink: it has the people, the expertise and world-class nuclear sites – all it needs now is a sensible climate policy which doesn’t discount the only source of clean, firm power.”
