Meet TJ Matthews, a Year 4 Instrumentation and Control (I&C) Nuclear Engineering Degree Apprentice for EDF Energy.

Read below why he chose to work in the nuclear sector.

Why did you choose to work in the nuclear sector?

“I chose to work within the nuclear industry because it sits at the heart of building a cleaner and more sustainable energy sector for future generations. Nuclear power’s ability to produce large amounts of low-carbon energy genuinely fascinates me, what a way to boil a kettle!

“Alongside the science and engineering behind power generation, I’m excited by the opportunity to work in an industry that operates to exceptionally high standards of safety and professionalism which will set me up for the rest of my career. The chance to learn from experienced professionals and continually develop my skills in such a technically advanced environment is something I find highly motivating, and it’s an industry I’m proud to be a part of.”

Why is nuclear energy important for the UK’s future?

“Nuclear energy is vital to the UK’s future because it provides a secure, reliable source of low-carbon electricity that supports both energy independence and environmental responsibility. As the UK works to reduce reliance on imported fuels, nuclear power strengthens energy security by delivery consistent generation regardless of weather conditions.

“Alongside renewables, nuclear plays a key role in achieving the UK’s net zero targets by producing electricity with minimal carbon emissions, helping to protect the environment for future generations. Its reliability ensures homes, businesses and essential services always have access to clean energy, making nuclear a vital role for the sustainability of the UK energy system.”

What would you say to someone considering a nuclear apprenticeship?

“I would personally say to jump at the opportunity! Nuclear apprenticeships allow you to earn while you learn, ensuring you gain vital hands-on experience in one of the most highly regulated and technically advanced industries in the world. You’ll learn directly from experienced professionals, picking up practical skills and industry knowledge that simply can’t be gained through traditional routes.

“Throughout my apprenticeship, I have valued the opportunity to work alongside a range of teams across the Hinkley Point C project, from design through installation and commissioning. I have also gained experience at an active power station, Heysham 2, where I developed an understanding of how an active station operates and managed to have hands-on experience working on a live plant.

“These experiences have helped me identify where I would like to work within the sector, which has been an invaluable opportunity. Most importantly, apprenticeships are open to anyone. If you have a genuine passion for the industry and a willingness to learn, an apprenticeship can be an excellent route to building a rewarding career within the nuclear sector.”
