In response to comments on nuclear energy made by the SNP ahead of Russell Findlay’s Net Zero Speech, Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association said:

“The SNP’s obsession with doing down Scotland’s nuclear workers risks the nation’s energy future. Our workers are bringing valuable jobs and investment to their communities, keeping the nation’s lights on and protecting the planet.

“The SNP forgets that half of nuclear jobs are in the most deprived council areas, and that Scotland’s last nuclear power station, Torness, is the cleanest, biggest, most reliable energy generator the nation has ever had. Torness was built in less than 8 years, at a time when the UK built multiple stations at once.

“The UK has some of the highest bills in Europe precisely because we have not built enough nuclear and must fill the gaps left by intermittent power sources with imported expensive gas. Bills in France are consistently cheaper and more competitive because they backed nuclear, a decision which means their grid is among the cleanest in Europe.

“The evidence is clear: The SNP should climb down from its ideological high horse and join the 30 other countries backing the facts and backing nuclear because it’s the right thing to do for their people and the planet.”
