The Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) has welcomed the confirmation from the Office for Nuclear Regulation and the Environment Agency that the HPR1000 reactor design has passed the second stage of design approval, which will have assessed it on the safety, security and environmental impact of the technology.
Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said:
“The HPR1000 reactor passing the second stage of design approval is welcome news for the UK’s new nuclear programme. This is a key step in the development of proposals from CGN and EDF’s joint venture, General Nuclear System, as it plans to build the HPR1000 reactor design at Bradwell in Essex.”
