NIA Reaction on Sizewell C/Energy White Paper
14 December 2020
The Government has confirmed that it is entering negotiations on Sizewell C and confirmed the publication of the Energy White Paper.
Reacting to the news, Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said:
“The Government’s decision to enter advanced negotiations with EDF on Sizewell C is very good news for our environment and our economy. Sizewell is a vital next step towards the net zero power mix we need for the future. As well as at least 60 years of constantly available clean electricity, this project will provide thousands of highly skilled, well paid and long term jobs across the supply chain, at a time when they are badly needed.
“We welcome the Government’s commitment to also engage with other developers, because the UK will need much more nuclear capacity – large, small modular and advanced reactors – to hit net zero. Stopping burning fossil fuels for power, no longer using diesel for transport and reducing how much polluting gas for heating will need four times our current capacity of zero emissions power. Wylfa, Bradwell and Moorside are all sites suitable for large scale nuclear reactors.
“The CCC has warned that our zero-carbon generating capacity is set to fall over the next 10 years, so the government’s commitment to an appropriate financing model for new nuclear capacity to cut the cost of capital, increase the pool of investors and reduce the price of electricity is key to unlocking the potential for thousands of clean energy jobs across the country.”
