Cross Party Group of MPs Welcomes Latest Nuclear Report
24 June 2020
Today the All Party Parliamentary Group on Nuclear Energy has welcomed the latest report from the Nuclear Industry Association, Forty by’50: The Nuclear Roadmap.
The report emphasises the need for swift government decisions on the future of the UK’s nuclear industry, highlighting the contribution it could make to Net Zero by providing 40% of clean energy, reinvigorating the economy after Covid-19, creating over 300,000 job opportunities and contributing £33bn in Gross Value Added to the economy every year.
Conservative Co-Chair of the APPG, Ian Liddell-Grainger MP said:
“There’s a fantastic window of opportunity for Government to seize the moment and truly maximise the benefits that this industry has to offer. We can’t get to Net Zero without it. Every day I see first-hand the benefits the construction of Hinkley Point C brings to my constituency, and it’s time this prosperity is felt across the whole country.”
Recently appointed Labour Co-Chair Mike Hill MP added:
“With all but one plant in our existing nuclear fleet due to come offline this decade, this report really shows why nuclear’s share of clean generation must be at least maintained as a matter of priority. We cannot put our Net Zero goal at risk, and neither should we lose the opportunity to create so many high-quality jobs.”
