Cavendish Nuclear and South West Nuclear Hub becomes partners in innovation

07 June 2018

Cavendish Nuclear is joining forces with the South West Nuclear Hub to open up new opportunities for innovation in the industry in the UK and overseas.

The UK’s largest nuclear services business has signed a three-year partnership agreement with the consortium, which brings together the universities of Bristol and Oxford with industry and government.

Cavendish Nuclear’s financial support will expand the hub’s R & D capability and open up opportunities to collaborate on the company’s cutting-edge programmes of work at sites across the UK and overseas.

Chief executive Simon Bowen said:

“Cavendish Nuclear is dedicated to making nuclear safer, faster and more cost-effective through innovation and I am excited by the prospect of working with renowned, world-leading organisations who share that goal.”

Cavendish Nuclear is engaged on the majority of licensed nuclear sites in the UK, from the construction of new nuclear power plant through to the lifetime extensions of the existing fleet and the decommissioning of redundant sites such as Dounreay and remediation of historic facilities in places such as Sellafield.

The company has a growing presence internationally and its parent body, Babcock International, is a key partner of the Royal Navy in the operation and maintenance of its nuclear propulsion systems and facilities and will also join the hub.

Jon Hall, managing director of technology at Babcock International, said:

“This collaboration will really benefit all parties and allow us to work towards developing innovative technological solutions in some of the most important areas facing the nuclear sector such as safety and efficiency. I’m delighted we are involved.”

Areas covered by the partnership agreement include:

  • New radiometric instrumentation.
  • Techniques for non-destructive in-situ testing of assets / infrastructure.
  • Understanding of radioactive waste production mechanisms.
  • Methods of in-situ decontamination.
  • Improved safety control system design.

Mark Dearden, Engineering & Assurance Director for Cavendish Nuclear said:

“Cavendish Nuclear brings the widest portfolio of work of any supplier in the UK and I’m looking forward to developing a partnership that will help transform the industry and make a significant contribution to the UK Government’s industrial strategy.”

Professor David Knowles, co-director of the South West Nuclear Hub said:

“Having a key player from the nuclear supply chain join the SW Nuclear Hub continues to broaden both our expertise and engagement with the industry, particularly as the new build programme gains momentum.

“They bring a diverse skill set which will lead both to diverse areas of innovation and real impact in the sector at a national level.”
