A Pathway to a Just Transition – The Role For Nuclear Power, followed by the Nuclear Institute’s Edinburgh Networking Dinner
19 March | Edinburgh
Scotland is increasingly at odds with Westminster’s energy direction and nowhere is this starker than the nuclear ban. Secretary of State Ed Miliband has hailed a “golden age of nuclear” while the SNP rules it out. Join this event and the dinner to explore the role of nuclear power in creating a just transition.
Why Scotland Needs Nuclear Power
Nuclear energy has saved more carbon than any other energy source in Scottish history. Torness, Scotland’s last remaining nuclear station, is the single largest, cleanest, and most reliable energy source in the nation, generating:
➤ Enough electricity to power every home in Scotland for ~30 years
➤ 17% of Scotland’s energy from 1/10th of a square mile
➤ Avoiding 101m tonnes of CO2 emissions (when compared to direct emissions of combined cycle gas turbines)
➤ Helping give South Scotland cleaner power than North Scotland according to grid operator NESO.
Nuclear = Jobs
Currently nuclear in Scotland provides 5,413 jobs – 30% of these are in some of the most deprived and rural areas.
Torness has generated £16.1 billion lifetime addition to the Scottish economy, including:
➤ £1.1 billion in wages since 2007
➤ £339 million in business rates
➤ £0 in public subsidy
➤ 750 full time jobs + outage spend
A Opportunity Lost
Because of the nuclear ban in Scotland, England has added 88 times more nuclear jobs than Scotland since 2014. That’s 43,000 new jobs in England versus 490 in Scotland. If Scotland had kept pace with England, this number could have been 5,000 new high-value, skilled jobs.
Additionally, Scotland currently is facing record high energy bills, an issue that could have been reduced with nuclear energy. When Torness power stations had a life extension, it cut bills by up to £70 per household.
In 2021, the Welsh Government secured a Memorandum of Understanding with the SZC consortium, potentially unlocking £900 million in investment and up to 4,700 jobs. There is no equivalent in Scotland.
