Serac Imaging Systems Limited, the developer of ‘Seracam®’ a platform imaging technology, announces the sale of a system to Sellafield, the UK's largest nuclear site and one of the most complex decommissioning programmes in the world.
The deployment marks Seracam’s first commercial installation at a major nuclear facility and will support Sellafield Ltd’s ongoing programme of radiological characterisation across legacy facilities scheduled for decommissioning.
Seracam delivers a number of practical benefits that respond directly to long-standing challenges in nuclear decommissioning. Among its key capabilities are real-time video imaging without reconstruction delay, gamma and optical data captured and co-aligned simultaneously, and high spatial resolution that can distinguish closely spaced sources or map distributed contamination.
Its portable design allows for handheld use or mounting on an articulated arm, giving flexibility for both rapid surveys and longer exposures for detailed images with high resolution. Its low power requirements and straightforward power over ethernet connection also make it well suited to integration with robotics and remote-operated vehicles, with potential for further miniaturisation where access is particularly limited.
Over the coming 12 months, Seracam will move into a structured integration programme at Sellafield. This phase will involve additional testing using further point sources, pilot use across a number of selected facilities, and closer collaboration with operational teams to identify how Seracam could be deployed in practice. The aim is for Seracam to become an established, everyday tool supporting decommissioning work, both at Sellafield and more widely across the NDA group and internationally.

During a demonstration of the system, Bill Johnson, Technology Demonstration Manager at Sellafield noted that:
“The technology was very impressive. It was exciting to see the areas of contamination within the gloveboxes with this level of detail. Seracam will enable us to better understand our environments and by doing it in a safer way, the data we collect will better inform decommissioning.”
