Nuclear is the public’s favourite energy source for keeping the lights on, chosen by 43% of people, with only 14% putting solar as their top pick
36% of people think nuclear will generate the most jobs and investment
The majority support new nuclear to replace retiring power stations, with 53% of people in support while just 22% oppose
Across the UK nuclear energy is seen as the top energy source for keeping the lights on, job creation and investment, according to new polling conducted by YouGov on behalf of the Nuclear Industry Association.
The public sees nuclear energy as the leading technology for delivering economic growth. Over a third (36%) said nuclear would do the most to create jobs and attract investment across the UK, ahead of solar (14%) and offshore wind (14%).
Additionally, 43% of respondents identified nuclear as the most important energy source for keeping the lights on, solar as the second preferred option at 14% and 12% for gas.
With all UK nuclear power stations currently set to close by 2030, apart from Sizewell B which will continue to operate until 2055, the polling found that 53% of people support building new nuclear power stations, while only 22% oppose, demonstrating continued public backing for expanding Britain’s clean, reliable energy infrastructure.
Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said:
“The British public understands nuclear power delivers reliable electricity, highly skilled and well-paid jobs and the clear investment it creates for communities across the country.
“As older stations retire, replacing them with new nuclear is essential to maintaining and improving our energy security, protecting households from the impact volatile gas markets have on the price of electricity, and ensuring the country has the reliable clean power needed to support economic growth.
“The public is behind new nuclear. The priority must now be to ensure proper implementation of the Nuclear Regulatory Review so we can deliver a new fleet of nuclear energy generators at pace and at scale.”
