In reaction to the Science, Innovation and Technology Committee’s report on delivering nuclear power (link), Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said,

“The Committee is right to show its unequivocal support for a programme of nuclear new build projects so that we can meet future electricity needs, ensure our energy security and help us reach ambitious climate targets, all the while creating thousands of jobs for people across the country.

“We must build 24 GW of nuclear by 2050 and we can do it if we have a clear strategic plan to mobilise industry and the workforce which will require a combined effort. We welcome the report’s call for a strategic plan of action from the Government, which we hope will include a detailed roadmap on how to deliver SMRs, gigawatt scale stations beyond Sizewell C and AMRs at pace and scale.

“The UK is well positioned to become a global hub for nuclear investment, with world-class sites, a competitive funding model, and in Great British Nuclear, a body that can help deliver projects. If we don’t act now, we will lose out on energy security, environmental sustainability and jobs for our people.”
