NIA reaction to Government’s new emissions reduction target
21 April 2021
The NIA welcomes the Government’s decision to adopt the Climate Change Committee’s (CCC) Sixth Carbon Budget in full, thereby setting a new target to cut carbon emissions by 78% by 2035.
Reacting to the news, Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said:
“This is a step in the right direction by the Government, but to meet these emissions targets, then we need a lot more clean power for electric cars, heat pumps and hydrogen production. That means investing urgently in new nuclear capacity that is our only source of firm, emissions-free power, to complement renewable sources. Right now, the UK is still too dependent on fossil fuels, and the only way out is to invest in all proven, low-carbon sources.”
