Wood wins Dounreay nuclear design and engineering contract

12 July 2018

Wood has won a framework contract to provide design and engineering services to the Dounreay nuclear site in Scotland, UK.

Effective immediately, it will run for up to four years, including two potential one-year extensions and has an estimated value of $3-4m to Wood.  The framework will help deliver the overarching decommissioning programme overseen by site licence company Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd (DSRL).

Wood, as prime contractor, and partners Orano, GDES and Aquila will provide services  including: design; engineering validation; environmental cases: environmental restoration; seismic; construction management; commissioning support; software modelling; waste strategy documents and technical support including provision of specialist staff.

Bob MacDonald, CEO of Specialist Technical Solutions at Wood, said:

“We are looking forward to working with DSRL on this contract, which adds to Wood’s growing portfolio of work at Dounreay and helps to advance our strategy to increase our share of the growing nuclear decommissioning market.

“We are playing our part in achieving the objectives jointly agreed between the industry and UK government in the Nuclear Sector Deal, including helping to reduce the cost of nuclear power across the lifecycle.”

We operate in more than 60 countries, employing around 55,000 people, with revenues of around $10 billion.  We provide performance-driven solutions throughout the asset life cycle, from concept to decommissioning across a broad range of industrial markets, including the upstream, midstream and downstream oil & gas, power & process, environment and infrastructure, clean energy, mining, nuclear, and general industrial sectors. We strive to be the best technical services company to work with, work for and invest in.

Orano’s priority is to create value for its customers and for society as a whole. Nuclear energy is a resource of the future. An energy resource, an economic resource, and one that generates jobs, and hence creates value. Orano wants to give nuclear energy this capacity to create value on multiple fronts right across the fuel cycle and in the medical sector. This is a conviction shared by the group’s 16,000 employees and expressed in its brand signature: Giving nuclear energy its full value.

GDES UK is a specialist nuclear decommissioning company providing technical advice along with hands-on operational delivery. It has 100 UK staff and has worked on Dounreay and Winfrith licensed sites for over a decade. GDES is a Spanish corporation with international expertise in support services for the energy industry in operations and maintenance, surface treatment, decommissioning and emergencies. With 40 years’ nuclear experience and 2,300 staff worldwide, half of its global turnover is in the nuclear industry.

Aquila is a nuclear engineering company created by, and comprised of, industry experts. It has been involved in the nuclear industry for the past 40 years with experience from every licensed nuclear site in the UK. Dounreay, a former centre of fast reactor research and development in Caithness, Scotland, is the UK’s most complex nuclear site after Sellafield. The UK government’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has tasked DSRL with closing down the site and leaving it in a safe condition for future generations. As part of the decommissioning process, three different reactor types must be dismantled.

Wood’s other contracts at Dounreay include:

  • Engineering, procurement and construction of a new effluent treatment plant
  • Detailed design, safety case and environmental assessment for a new intermediate level waste store.
  • Design and manufacturing of new fuel containers.
  • Frameworks covering professional services, electrical installation, control and instrumentation, testing, commissioning and maintenance support.
