Nuclear will help maintain:

Britain needs home-grown energy to reduce dependence on foreign imports and keep the lights on.

Economic Growth
Investment in new nuclear will be a major engine for economic growth.

Nuclear energy offers long term price stability for consumers and businesses.

Low carbon generation
The new energy mix needs to be low carbon if we are to meet tough carbon reduction targets.

Nuclear generates low carbon electricity

The nuclear sector has safely generated electricity in the UK for over 60 years and supports more than 64,000 jobs across the country. Today, around 21% of the UK’s electricity supplies come from nuclear power, making it the largest single source of low carbon power. Nuclear power also avoids 49 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year – the equivalent of taking 78% of Britain’s cars off the road.

Nuclear new build will secure the UK’s electricity supplies

There is an urgent need to invest in low-carbon infrastructure in the UK to meet legally binding carbon emission reduction targets, but also to replace old fossil fuel plants which are closing. New nuclear will provide consumers with a reliable source of baseload energy to complement the power generated from renewable sources.

The UK has world class decommissioning knowledge

As a pioneer of nuclear power, the UK is at the forefront of developing decommissioning knowhow and is one of the world-leaders in nuclear decommissioning and waste management. The technology and capability developed at Sellafield and across the decommissioning estate is being exported and deployed throughout the world. In the future, decommissioning will be funded by the operators through the Funded Decommissioning Programme.
