Chairman Lord Hutton

Lord Hutton has been a Member of the Upper House since 2010 following a successful 18 year career as the Labour Member of Parliament for Barrow and Furness. During this time, he held a number of ministerial positions including as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions from 2005-07, Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform from 2007-08, and Secretary of State for Defence from 2008-09. 

Most recently, Lord Hutton was invited by the coalition government to Chair a Commission on public service pensions, with its final report being published in March this year. 

Lord Hutton was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford and has three sons and a daughter.

Chief Executive Keith Parker

Keith has been Chief Executive since September 2003.  Keith joined the Nuclear Industry Association in December 1995 from the DTI and in March 1997 became Head of Corporate Communications, accountable for the strategic direction of the Associations communications, public affairs, media relations and issue management programmes.

During the 1980s Keith worked in the Department of Energy on the two major nuclear power station public inquiries into Sizewell B and Hinkley Point C.

In the early 1990s, he was Private Secretary for two years to Tony Baldry MP and David Heathcoat-Amory MP, Parliamentary Under Secretaries of State at the Department of Energy. During this period he was closely involved in policy formulation and decision making in the areas of nuclear power, coal, electricity generation and energy efficiency.

He was also Private Secretary to Robert Key MP, Minister at the newly-created Department of National Heritage.

Head of Communications Kirsty Alexander

Kirsty Alexander joined the NIA in April 2012.

Kirsty has advised central government departments, charities and private sector firms for more than ten years.

As Head of Communications for the Office of Nuclear Development at the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in 2009 she ran the public consultation for the Energy National Policy Statements. This was later cited by Planning Aid as an example of best practice. Kirsty’s most recent role was Deputy Head of Civil Nuclear Security (Communications) for DECC.

Prior to this, Kirsty was Head of PR for the UK's leading 'green' communications agency, Futerra. She led the PR team developing media handling strategies, generating press coverage and advising on sustainability communications for dozens of big brand clients. Before this, Kirsty led communications for the Town and Country Planning Association, where she established the Planning for Climate Change coalition, involving more than 50 organisations, which successfully changed government policy.

Kirsty was a Senior Press Officer for Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott for four years, and was also seconded to the Prime Minister’s press office at No.10 Downing Street in 2003.

Kirsty has a BA Hons degree in Political Science, and an MSc in Business Strategy, Politics and the Environment from Birkbeck, University of London.

Communications Officer Alastair Evans

Alastair Evans joined the Nuclear Industry Association in May 2011.

Prior to this he worked for a public affairs consultancy. In this position he advised on lobbying, and campaigning for a range of clients, and ran 2 All Party Groups. He is active in politics and assisted in researching and drafting policy on work and pensions which was used in a party manifesto in the 2010 General Election.

As Communications Officer he is responsible for all aspects of NIA Public Relations including our quarterly magazine Industry Link, communication updates to membership and public audiences, along with project specific work on a variety of industry related topics. Alastair is also the NIA representative on our Decommissioning, Quality and External Relations Working Groups.

Alastair is a graduate of Reading University, having studied for an LLB. He then moved to London in order to study for the Bar Vocational Course  and is a member of Lincoln's Inn.

Accounts Administrator Sandra Evenden

Sandra Evenden joined the Nuclear Industry Association over fifteen years ago and has worked alongside the Accountant dealing with daily accounting, managing the banking and day-to-day queries.

Sandra also assists with general administration duties as well as helping with events as and when required.

Public Affairs Officer Hannah Grimsley

Hannah joined the NIA in March 2011 as a Public Affairs Officer and works on a number of political and communication issues, including the NIA's Political Party Conference programme. In addition, Hannah also provides the Secretariat for the New Build Working Group.

Prior to Joining the NIA she spent 2 years working in the office of Rt. Hon Keith Vaz MP, Chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee, first as a Parliamentary Assistant and later as a Senior Parliamentary Officer. In this position Hannah undertook research on a wide range of subject matters including policing, immigration and Europe, as well as the role of press officer and the general management of the parliamentary team.

Hannah studied at Newcastle University and was awarded an undergraduate degree in BA Law with French and a postgraduate degree in MA European Union Studies. Immediately after University she completed an External Affairs Internship at the Institute of Public Policy Research (North).

Public Policy Adviser Peter Haslam

Peter Haslam has been a consultant to the NIA for several years, and is now their Public Policy Adviser. He has over 25 years experience in the energy sector and an extensive knowledge of Whitehall and the wider parliamentary process.

Prior to becoming a consultant in 2005 he was British Energy's Director of Government Affairs for 9 years. During his career at BE, Peter developed and implemented the company's public affairs strategy at the Scottish, Westminster and European levels. Prior to this, his roles included Public Affairs Manager at Nuclear Electric plc and Head of the Parliamentary Section at the Central Electricity Generating Board. Before joining the electricity industry in 1986 Peter was a career civil servant in the Department of Energy, including spells as private secretary to two Government Ministers.

Head of Administration Veronica Lekavicius

Veronica has worked in a number of sectors including finance, accountancy, building and construction, engineering, events management and entertainment giving her an insight into commercial and administrative practices.  She has also run her own consultancy business.

She joined British Nuclear Industry Forum (BNIF) as Personal Assistant/Office Manager and latterly became the Industrial Liaison Manager taking on the responsibility of running internal events and co-ordinating inward and outward missions working closely with DTI.

Veronica left the industry to join the telecommunication and broadcasting sector during the time OFCOM was formed and organised events, meetings both in the UK and overseas working closely with international regulators, broadcasting and telecommunications organisations promoting the industry.

Following an eight year gap Veronica returned to the nuclear industry when she 
re-joined NIA (rebranded from BNIF) as Head of Administration.  Her responsibilities include office management, events and exports.

Communications Executive Rupert Lewis

Rupert Lewis joined the NIA in November 2011 after a brief introduction to the nuclear industry through work experience with Centronic Ltd. He began work with the NIA as an Intern helping on all fronts but was formerly appointed as Communications Executive in March 2012.

Working closely with the rest of the communications team, Rupert is responsible for a number of the NIA’s regular updates for both members and the public. He is also an NIA representative for the New Build and Nuclear Export working groups.

Rupert attended Wellington College, Berks. and is a recent graduate from Southampton University, having studied BA Geography.

Member Relations Manager Stephanie McKenna

Stephanie’s background is in events working for Metal Bulletin, a publishing company as an Event Organiser for 4 years after spending a summer as a Travel Representative in Rhodes, Greece.

Stephanie joined the NIA in March 2007 as Membership & Events Officer and is now Member Relations Manager liaising with member companies to ensure they make best use of their membership. 

Stephanie is secretariat for the Decommissioning and Rad-Waste working group as well as the Quality Working Group.

Website and Marketing Officer Dan Powney

Dan originally joined the nia for a temporary administrative role in 2009 and returned in Spring 2010 to take up a permanent position.

He adapted quickly to support the various areas of NIA work including events, membership and communications as well as taking responsiblity for specialist projects such as the NIA Jobs Map, the SC@nuclear supply chain map and the membership trade directory.

Throughout his time with the NIA Dan has become increasingly invoved with marketing the NIA brand and management of the websites to ensure all information and content is current and relevant. As a result he was appointed Website and Marketing Officer in Autumn 2011.

Dan's comes from an arts background. His previous work experience includes sales and marketing positions with various specialist retailers alongside administration and recruitment with the Office for Metropolitan Architecture in New York. At the same period he also studied marketing modules through the University of Cambridge as part of the Mountbatten Internship Programme.

Member Relations and PA to the Chief Executive Nikki Powney

Nikki Powney joined the NIA in 1995 as a Junior Secretary and is now PA to the Chief Executive.

As well as her PA duties Nikki also helps with the general administration duties as well as attending and helping with events.

More recently she has overseen the management of Member Relations and provided Secretariat duties to the Decommissioning Working Group.

Nikki also coordinates the diary for our Chairman Lord Hutton.

Accountant (Part-time) Stephen Tustin

Qualified as a Chartered Accountant in New Zealand , Stephen joined the Nuclear Electricity Information Group (NEIG) as Accountant. This group later merged with the British Nuclear Forum (BNF) and the name was changed to British Nuclear Industry Forum (BNIF) to avoid confusion with British Nuclear Fuels.

In 2003 the name was changed to Nuclear Industry Association (NIA).

The accountant’s function is a part-time role as the organisation is relatively small. Stephen spent six years as Financial Controller at the Council of Mortgage Lenders up to 2006 and now also looks after several other “very small” trade associations.
