UN report welcomed by UK nuclear industry | Print |  E-mail

REPORTS CLAIMING a major international climate change study will back nuclear power has been warmly welcomed by the UK nuclear industry.

Keith Parker, chief executive of the Nuclear Industry Association said reports in national newspapers claiming the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report scheduled for release this week were “hugely encouraging” for the UK’s nuclear industry.

The report, sponsored by the UN, is the work of  more than two thousand eminent scientists and economists from around the world.

Keith Parker said nuclear power needed to be at the heart of a low-carbon economy for the UK.

“This report, carried out by an international panel of independent experts, agrees that nuclear power must be at the forefront of efforts to tackle climate change.”

“We have maintained that, if there is a serious intention to cut carbon emissions, nuclear must be central to our future energy mix. It seems now that our position will be supported by the most highly respected scientific report on the issue.”

Nuclear currently supplies 20% of UK energy, however this will be down to single figures by 2023 as existing stations go offline.
