THE UK’S CIVIL NUCLEAR TRADE ASSOCIATION has today assured the public that it remains confident that new nuclear will be delivered in a timely manner; despite the governments announcements of a second period of consultation on the energy National Policy Statements. Keith Parker, chief executive of the Nuclear Industry Association was speaking today in light of the government announcement that there will be further public consultation this Autumn on the energy National Policy Statements. Mr Parker commented: “The industry remains confident in our programme for delivery, despite the delays to the NPS announced today. The fact that all the key procedures are running in parallel means that despite this extension, the industry can forge ahead and avoid any significant impact to target dates”. He went on: “Public consultation is crucial to so many areas of new build, and we fully understand that the government will be keen to ensure that the public-engagement process around the NPS’s has been as inclusive as possible”. The NIA has however called on government to “maintain momentum” on the new build process. Mr Parker said: “Any further delay could undermine the confidence of potential investors and companies in the nuclear supply chain. We would urge government to continue progress on the other workstreams around nuclear such as regulatory Justification, reform of the regulator and market modernisation”. He continued: “The UK needs the secure and reliable supply of base-load low carbon energy that nuclear can play a crucial role in supplying.
