NIA welcomes progress on design assessment | Print |  E-mail
Friday, 27 November 2009
NIA is today pleased to welcome the completion of the third stage of the “Generic Design Assessment” reactor evaluation phase of the UK’s nuclear new build programme.

Commenting as the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate announced that they “remain confident that a meaningful GDA will be delivered on both designs by its scheduled completion date of June 2011”; the NIA’s Chief Executive has praised the process and welcomed the NII’s timely delivery.

Mr Parker commented: “We are very pleased to see the process towards new build moving forward in a timely and effective manner. We are buoyed by the NII’s confidence that GDA will be completed by June 2011”.

Speaking about the assessment that the NII will make of the Areva and Westinghouse reactor designs he noted: “This is a rigorous and demanding assessment – and rightly so. The industry takes the need to satisfy the regulators demands incredibly seriously, and we are confident that we can continue to do so”.

The Generic Design Assessment process is a crucial phase of the new build project, involving a reactor design being licensed and approved before the start of construction.
