NIA welcomes completion of sites auction | Print |  E-mail
Thursday, 30 April 2009
THE SUCCESSFUL completion of the land auction for new build sites at Wylfa, Oldbury and Bradwell was warmly welcomed by the Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) today.

The news announced by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) means the joint-venture between utilities EON UK Plc and RWE Npower Plc has successfully bid for NDA land at Wylfa (Anglesey) and Oldbury (Gloucestershire), and that EDF has purchased land at Bradwell (Essex).

The news presents a much clearer picture of future nuclear development in the UK and was greeted with enthusiasm by the UK’s nuclear trade association.

Keith Parker, the NIA’s chief executive said the move went some way to removing uncertainty over the UK’s low-carbon energy future.

“I congratulate the successful bidders and the NDA for the highly-professional way in which this complex process has been handled. We now have major utilities underpinning their commitment to build enough new nuclear to provide the UK with a quarter of its electricity needs.

“Nuclear is an essential part of our low-carbon future and provides secure, stably-priced climate-friendly generation for Britain’s energy needs.”

The NDA land sale process started in March 2008. Today they confirmed the sales of the three sites is worth £387 million which the NDA will use to fund on-going decommissioning.

The EON/RWE joint-venture is committed to developing new nuclear at its two new sites and aims to deliver at least six gigawatts of new nuclear capacity while

EDF Plan to develop 6.4 gigawatts of output – a joint figure that exceeds nuclear’s current contribution to the UK’s electricity mix.
