E.ON joins Nuclear Industry Association | Print |  E-mail
E.ON, one of the UK’s leading integrated power companies, has joined the UK’s nuclear trade association.

Centred in Dusseldorf, the E.ON Group is the world’s largest investor-owned power company with around 88,000 employees in headquarters in more than 20 countries, and has diverse operational interests in Europe, Russia and the US.  It also operates nuclear power stations in Germany and Sweden.

In the UK, E.ON is one of the country’s leading power and gas companies – generating and distributing electricity, and retailing power and gas. Its retail business is a leading energy supplier in the UK, with around 8 million electricity and gas customer accounts, covering domestic, SME and industrial. Its distribution business, branded Central Networks, provides a reliable supply to 4.9 million customers in central England. Its generation business produces enough electricity to cater for the needs of around eight million homes from a portfolio of world-class gas, coal and oil-fired power stations.

E.ON is also one of the leading green generators in the UK, with 21 wind farms located from Cornwall to Northern Ireland, and has recently opened one of the UK’s largest dedicated biomass power stations at Lockerbie. Combined, E.ON’s renewable portfolio generates enough green energy to power the homes in a city the size of Manchester.

NIA Chairman Lord O’Neill said he was delighted E.ON UK had decided to join the association.

“The Nuclear Industry Association has a diverse membership including some of the world’s leading power and engineering companies. We fully support a broad energy mix for the UK including clean-coal, gas, renewables and of course nuclear, and we look forward to working closely with E.ON, one of the very best power utilities.”

Dr. Paul Golby, Chief Executive of E.ON UK, said his company continued to be at the cutting-edge of power supply and development in the UK.

“Nuclear energy is a vital part of the UK’s balanced energy strategy in the future.  Alone amongst current technologies, it can provide low-carbon baseload power, and is complementary to intermittent renewable energy.”

“ E.ON intends to participate fully in this nuclear future through building at least two reactors, as part of a balanced portfolio including energy efficiency initiatives, new cleaner coal, gas, renewables and distributed generation.”

E.ON has considerable nuclear expertise to draw on and is one of the utilities supporting the NIA’s “Justification” application to government.

The company is also leading the way in the development of both onshore and offshore wind farms and has combined heat and power plants and a biomass plant and is currently building a gas storage facility.

E.ON UK has a major community investment programme and is heavily involved in energy education. The company has also sponsored The FA Cup since 2006, along with the Women’s FA Cup, the FA Youth Cup, and is the Football Association’s main schools partner.
