THE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION has today applauded the clear support for nuclear energy which is at the heart of the Conservative Party’s energy policy paper.

NIA Chief Executive Keith Parker commented: “it is reassuring to see that both Government and the official opposition are keen to deliver stable continuity in the policy framework around nuclear energy”.

Mr Parker went on to say: “nuclear power stations are by their nature long-term projects, that require long-term policy stability. That the Conservatives are taking it upon themselves to ‘facilitate nuclear power’ is very welcome”.

The NIA is completely at ease with the Conservative policy of no-subsidy, Mr Parker noted: “the private sector is ready, willing and able to deliver privately funded nuclear new build. We will not need Government subsidy”.

Turning to the topic of carbon-pricing, he commented: “a strong and stable price for carbon is essential to reward developers of low-carbon technology. The price of carbon must remain at an adequate level to deter carbon-intensive generation and support our moves to decarbonise the UK economy”.
