Survey shows 72% of public believe nuclear should play part in balanced energy mix | Print |  E-mail

Some 72% of the British public say nuclear power should form part of a balanced energy mix for the future.

In a nationally representative survey of 1,999 people carried out by Ipsos MORI in November, members of the public were questioned about their attitudes to energy and their concerns for the environment.

Following on from the Government’s energy review conclusions in July, which signalled a role for nuclear in meeting the UK’s future energy policy goals, the poll results were consistent with last year’s encouraging figures on support for replacement nuclear build.

The headline figure shows 72% agreed that Britain needs a mix of energy sources to ensure a reliable supply of electricity, including nuclear power and renewable energy sources.

The poll follows July’s survey of MPs’ attitudes to nuclear, which showed increasing support – especially among Labour MPs.

The survey also focused on environmental concerns. Climate change and the effects of global warming came our as by far the public’s biggest environmental concern.

Keith Parker, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association said the findings were encouraging for the industry.

“Following on from the hugely positive findings of the MPs survey in the summer this demonstrates very encouraging levels of support for our industry.

“It is heartening to see high approval ratings from the general public and increased awareness of the nuclear industry’s positive role in combating climate change and providing security of supply.”

When questioned about the possible construction of new nuclear power stations in the UK, assuming the same overall proportion of nuclear energy is retained, 39% supported them while just 29% opposed them.
