NIA welcomes launch of EU Energy Policy | Print |  E-mail
Wednesday, 10 January 2007

The Nuclear Industry Association (NIA), the representative body for the UK civil nuclear industry, has welcomed the Commission’s launch of the European Union’s package of energy measures.

The measures aim to ensure the EU continues to play its part in fighting climate change and to secure its energy supplies.

NIA Chief Executive Keith Parker said:

“It is encouraging to see that the European Commission has recognised the urgency of climate change and the key role that energy and the electricity sector can play in it.”

“The Commission is keen to see an increase in low carbon economies among member states and nuclear alongside renewables and challenging energy efficiency objectives must play a vital part.”

“The Commission has also recognised the role that nuclear plays in reducing carbon dioxide emissions while recognising, quite rightly, that the decision on whether or not to deploy nuclear is a matter for the individual Member States.”
