The fifth annual Summer Institute of the World Nuclear University has begun this week at Oxford University's Christ Church College. The event is the premier educational programme for young professionals in the nuclear industry and will see 100 promising young people from around the world take part in the six-week programme. The wide-ranging content of the Institute includes lectures on nuclear's global impact and contribution, latest design technology, regulation and safety issues. It willl also look at public opinion towards nuclear power around the world. Currently there are more than 400 nuclear power stations around the world producing 15% of the world's electricity. This is clean-air electricity as it is extremely low-carbon and the Summer Institute will look at the importance of nuclear in fighting climate change. Last year's Summer Institute was in Ottawa, Canada, but the World Nuclear University, which is supported by the NIA intend to base the event at Oxford for the next three years. Young nuclear professionals from around the world are chosen on merit and the programme aims to engender teamwork - and bring out leadership qualities. So far some 400 Summer Institute "fellows" from 58 different countries have graduated from the scheme. Comments (0)
