Two more nuclear reactors to be built in Finland | Print |  E-mail
Thursday, 01 July 2010
The Finnish parliament today confirmed that it has approved, with a clear majority, the
applications submitted by TVO and Fennovoima for the construction of two more nuclear
reactors in Finland, thereby ratifying the “decision in principle” that the Finnish government
reached in April 2010.

The decision by the Finnish parliament will enable the country to reduce its CO2 emissions and enhance
its energy security and independence. It also provides further evidence of the growing political support
for nuclear energy in Europe. Santiago San Antonio, Director General of FORATOM, the trade
association representing the European nuclear industry, welcomed the news and placed it within a wider
European context:

“We applaud the decision of Finland’s parliament. If you add the two new ones in Finland to the six
already under construction and those in the construction pipeline in Europe, the total number of planned
new reactors in Europe is around 30. This underlines the vital security of supply, CO2 mitigation and
competitiveness credentials of nuclear energy.”
