The Nuclear Industry is taking the lead in green issues by encouraging senior executives to become “Environmental Leaders.” The nuclear industry already prevents millions of tonnes of CO2 from polluting the atmosphere by providing clean-air electricity to millions of people daily. And now the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and the Environment Agency are teaming-up to encourage senior bosses to lead the way to a greener future. The two organisations jointly hosted an Environmental Leadership conference in Manchester with the aim of sharing and promoting best environmental practice throughout the nuclear industry. Senior executives from the nuclear industry and its regulatory bodies attended the conference, including representatives from British Energy, the Nuclear Directorate of the Health and Safety Executive and SEPA. Delegates considered what high-level environmental leadership means, and what a company needs to do to achieve best in class environmental performance. All attending organisations were asked to commit to at least one change following the event. Ed Mitchell, Head of Business Performance and Regulation for the Environment Agency, who this year were recognised as the “greenest public sector organisation” by the Sunday Times, addressed the conference and said: “This is a great opportunity to reach senior managers who have the power to make a real difference to the environment”. The NDA’s Environment Manager, Andrew Craze, said: “Decommissioning is about restoring and improving the environment, so it makes sense that environmental leadership is an essential part of the process. “As an industry we need to make sure we are achieving the best possible result for the environment, as well as minimising the impact we have on it as a result of our day to day operations.” Comments (0)
