| Nuclear for “sustainable low-carbon future” - OECD | | Print | |

A “major expansion of nuclear power is one route to low-carbon electricity”, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) claims. In an influential paper published to coincide with the Copenhagen climate negotiations, the global organisation that promotes sustainable economic growth and global development described the potential role of nuclear energy in helping to address climate change, placing that role in perspective with other energy sources. Nuclear power could provide around 25 percent of global electricity with almost no CO2 emissions, the organisation’s energy unit says. “The safety performance of nuclear power plants and other civil nuclear facilities in OECD countries is generally excellent, certainly by comparison with other energy cycles,” the paper adds. The organisation has more than 100 member countries and plays an increasingly important role in global economic development. It is the world’s leading think-tank and publisher on economic development and sustainable growth and actively lobbies governments for “a fairer and cleaner” world.” The paper is available in full on the OECD’s Nuclear Energy Agency website (http://www.nea.fr). For details on the Copenhagen talks see the conference website (http://en.cop15.dk). Comments (0)
