NIA highlights importance of low carbon energy | Print |  E-mail
Friday, 23 October 2009
THE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY has today highlighted the importance of the low carbon energy it supplies to the UK market.

NIA has responded to recent comments on the industry, highlighting the fact that the sector supplies the UK with a reliable flow of secure, low-carbon and environmentally sustainable energy.

NIA Chief Executive Keith Parker commented: “Nuclear power is quite simply the only technology which is capable of providing secure, continuous supplies of low-carbon electricity which is generated in the UK”.

“Nuclear power does not rely on unpredictable weather conditions and is not dependent on short-term imports of fuel from potentially unreliable suppliers”.

Mr Parker also pointed to the industry’s safety record in the UK, noting that: “The UK nuclear industry is amongst the most highly regulated industries in the world. We have an exemplary safety record and are setting the international standard in terms of decommissioning and clean-up”.

Nuclear power is seen by the industry – and by governments around the globe – as a crucial part of the energy mix. Working alongside renewables, fossil fuels with carbon capture and storage and energy efficiency; nuclear can play a key role in helping the UK move towards a low-carbon economy.
