NIA Head up UK Delegation to China | Print |  E-mail
Friday, 27 August 2010
NIA Chief Executive, Keith Parker headed a week-long UK delegation of seven companies to Beijing and Shanghai. The delegation was made up both members and non-members of NIA, who were in China to attend the 4th Annual China Nuclear Power Congress in Shanghai.

Supported by UKTI, the trip also included a programme of meetings with high-ranking officials in the state nuclear power companies in Beijing.

The China Nuclear Power Congress typically attracts senior directors and engineers from China's nuclear power plants, top design institutes, construction groups, engineering companies and three major Nuclear Power Equipment Production Bases. The programme focused on China's newest industrial policies, advanced technology solutions for plant growth, project management, and the most up-to-date progress reports on major projects in China.

NIA was a principal sponsor of the Congress, and Keith Parker gave a presentation outlining the UK nuclear scene, highlighting how the UK is ideally positioned to assist in new nuclear programmes.

UKTI and NIA also sponsored a lunch for 40 Chinese delegates attending the Congress; with each member of the UK delegation giving a brief overview of their aspect of the UK market and capabilities, enabling them to develop working contacts.

The conference agenda proved highly informative for the attendant British delegates who were keen to learn more about the scale of the Chinese nuclear programme. It was clear from the conference that China’s ambition to be self-sufficient in nuclear power is one of their driving policies; however significant opportunities are available or British companies if a coordinated and reasonably complete UK-industry offering were put forth.

Prior to the conference, meetings were arranged in Beijing by the British Consulate with the Vice President of China National Nuclear Corporation and the Vice President of the State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation Ltd. The SNPTC described their process of empowering the country’s capabilities to manufacture and deploy nuclear capacity and noted opportunities for UK collaboration in Valves, Instrumentation, and Radiation Detection. CNNC noted a need for further capabilities in the Transport of Fuels, and in Fuel Assembly.

The UK delegation, visited the futuristic UK Pavilion at Expo 2010 Shanghai as guests of the British Consulate in Shanghai.
