The Environment Agency has published a nuclear sector plan, after joint working with the nuclear industry.
The plan builds on and identifies future priorities for the nuclear industry, and recognises nuclear’s commitment to a clean environment.
The plan also looks ahead to future challenges and reflects important changes, such as the decommissioning and clean-up of the UK's nuclear legacy.
The Agency said the plan is important “as it details environmental objectives for the sector and specifies performance indicators. These will help to ensure that the environmental impacts of nuclear energy are minimised and continue to be managed responsibly.”
“The nuclear industry continues to support the sector plan, using it to monitor and report on the environmental impact of its activities and allowing us to ensure that as little harm as possible is caused to the environment.”
NIA chief executive Keith Parker said:
“The UK civil nuclear industry takes environmental responsibilities very seriously and it is quite right that on this issue - as well as many others - we are amongst the most highly regulated industries in the UK. We work hard to be a good neighbour to the communities in which we operate and to care for the environment. The Environment Agency plays a critical role in ensuring that we continuously strive to improve upon already high standards. Consultation on projects such as the nuclear sector plan launched today plays an important role in the regulatory process.”
